Be careful what you ask for!

Several months ago, a humorous request went out for a Zamboni that could be used on the Nerdy Derby track.

Last year the Milwaukee Makerspace held a Maker Fest and a Nerdy Derby track was made for the occasion. The design allowed the track to be disassembled in 4 foot long sections.

When the track was reassembled, earlier this year, for the South Side Chicago Maker Faire, it was found that the joints did not match up as well as when it was first put together. Small ledges, that went up and down, would cause the cars to bounce off the track or hit the bottom of the car. Both of these scenarios prevented the cars from traveling freely down the track.

As many of you know, we just had a GREAT Maker Faire here in Milwaukee last month and the Nerdy Derby track was needed again!

We produced, and ran, over 1000 Nerdy Derby cars over the 2 day event. Wow!

Be careful what you ask for!

A month or so before the event I started working on an idea for a Zamboni type of device. My first thought was of a custom contoured planer that could be used at each joint to smooth them out. This idea seemed like too much work so I proceeded forward with my second design. This consisted of a simple sled hat used a drum sander, which smoothed out the high spots. Wood putty was then used to fill in any low spots.

The Hivelord at UArts Design Charette 2014: Cyborgs

I heard there were smoothies here?

Salutations, flatlanders! Your electron based mail message reached my hyper-dimensional lair, I was lured out of the 67th dimension by word of snacks, refreshments, and of course, your attempts to augment your meaty forms with your so called ‘technology.’ The idea: to design artifacts made 50 years in your future. How will they affect the fragile social human construct? More specifically, are these items you’re designing to simplify and enhance your lives creating one step forward in the inevitable march toward a dystopian hellscape? I’d answer these questions, but I’m technically not allowed to break causality.

But I digress, I’m really here to show you all the souls I stole pictures I took with my face. It only took a few years off your lifespan, and there’s a 50/50 chance they were bad years anyway. Thanks for being such good sports!

And here’s a soul-theft in action. Looks painful!

SHHHH 0x22 – Moving Out Party

Hello hackers, Tinkerers, Builders, Crafters, and Makers

In light of the recent news, we can’t just move out without getting together at the bunker one last time:

The Vancouver HackSpace is opening its doors to the general public for an open house and a Super Happy Holiday Hacker House 34!

Due to VHS being forced to move out, we will dedicate this edition to raise funds for the move and everything that comes into play with it. Members and the public are encouraged to organize and sell things for the greater good of the community. We’re trying to figure out the format still. Updates are to follow shortly.

Open house – (noon till 9 PM)
Never been to a hack space before? This is the perfect time to visit! We will give you the grand tour of the space. There will be a BBQ on site during the day if you want to bring something down to cook.

Super Happy Holiday Hacker House – (9 PM – Late)
SH(H)HH a social night where members and non-members are welcome to gather for conversation, beverages, lightning talks, and super happy hacking. Bring your laptops, Arduinos, crafts, and gadgets for a night of merry making!

Lightning talks – (11PM)
Lightning talk is a short presentation on any subject that you want. Unlike other presentations, lightning talks last only a few minutes (2 min or less) and several talks will happen in a single period by different speakers. Challenge coins will given out to the people doing talks. Here is a video of some of our previous lighting talks

Remember to BRING YOUR OWN CUP !

NIGHTSHIFT 2014: kwartzlab members projects!

What is it?

What is it?

NIGHTSHIFT 2014 is downtown Kitchener’s second annual nuit blanche-style festival of art, culture and nocturnal adventure.

When is it?

NIGHTSHIFT 2014 begins at 7pm on Saturday, November 1st, the night of the annual autumn time change, and will run into the wee hours.

Where is it?

NIGHTSHIFT attractions are spread throughout various indoor and outdoor locations in downtown Kitchener, based around a central event hub on Duke Street (closed between Frederick and Queen), and spreading out in both directions along Queen (as well as into the two downtown laneways – Halls and Goudies).

Who’s behind it?

NIGHTSHIFT is a project of locally-produced environmental magazine AJ (Alternatives Journal) with involvement from local artists, businesses and other community builders.

In addition to publishing a national magazine, AJ is a registered charity engaged in environmental education and community-building activities. Envisioning a better future is a central goal at AJ, and exploring or reimagining the built spaces around us is integral to achieving that goal.

Make sure to come visit the Gaint Light Bright project made by myself (Agnes) and Bernie Rohde! It will be available to play with in Goudies Lane. More details here:

Below are some photos of the Light Bright in progress. Many thanks to all the extra hands and brains who have helped along the way!

Also, you won’t want to miss our very own balloon wizard, Drew Ripley’s project. He has teamed up with Community Care Share to bring to create a life-size balloon car that you can pose in for a photo…and even pop (the popping party starts at 1 am!)

More info on this and location here:

Business Matters

On the business and organizational side, Maui Makers has incorporated as a 501c3, and elected a Board of Directors and Officers. The Board has completed a Strategic Plan and a Preliminary Budget to take the Makerspace to the next level. In that light, you’ll be seeing a few changes in the near future:

A paying membership structure will be set up to help us pay the bills–electrons to keep you informed cost money. We are committed to keeping costs low, but will need your help in pushing to the next level with more tools, classes and a permanent space.

Members will get free or reduced cost access to classes.

We continue to explore space options. We have yet to secure affordable, unlimited access to a permanent home. If you have any leads in this area, please contact the Board at
